Homes for Islanders
Young people have a rough time when it comes to getting housing that is affordable. There are so many extra costs and fees that it effectively prices people under 25 out of the market. This has been made worse by the Conservative government's cuts to housing benefits for 18 to 21 year olds. The Liberal Democrats would investigate ways to change this. We would set up a trust to let 18 to 25 year olds borrow money to cover deposits and admin fees. Our young people are the backbone of the Island's economy, it's time we gave them a hand.

One way we can give a hand is by increasing the housing stock on the Isle of Wight by almost nine hundred properties without even sticking one brick to another. What we need to do is to make a concentrated effort to identify empty, abandoned and derelict properties which could be brought back into use. There are many of these all over the Island, even in comparatively affluent areas. The Isle of Wight Council currently believes that there are 869 empty properties[1]. Perhaps they are right, perhaps not. Either way there is a significant problem size when we have the equivalent of a small town standing empty.
